ENTREVISTA EN LOS CAMERINOS: BRIAN MAY, ROGER TAYLOR Y PAUL RODGERS

JAMIE PRESSLY: Tengo que preguntarte sobre tu primera guitarra.Entiendo que la hiciste con la ayuda de tu padre.

BRIAN MAY: De hecho se trata de mi primera y ùltima guitarra, si, porque es la ùnica que hicimos. Asì es, la hice con mi papà , empezamos cuando tenìa 17 años , hasta que cumplì los 19 mas o menos.

JP: Pero tu papà no era un gran fan del rock’n’roll, ¿o si?

BM: Asì es, se oponìa terminantemente a que incursionara en esto , porque decìa que no era un trabajo adecuado, y quizàs tenìa razòn. Mas era lo que yo tenìa que hacer.

JP: Parece que todo se resolviò a tu favor.

BM: Finalmente se dejò convencer . Le conseguí un boleto de aviòn para que fuera a vernos al Madison Square Garden , y dijo: “Està bien. Ahora comprendo.” (risas) Y este fue un momento muy importante para mi.

JP: Me lo imagino.

BM: Todos necesitamos complacer a nuestros padres, ¿no?, tù sabes.

ROGER TAYLOR: He tocado algunas veces con los Foo Fighers . Es uno de nuestros grupos favoritos, tù sabes, son mucho màs jóvenes que nosotros, pero realmente tienen mucha energìa, y me encanta tocar con ellos y verlos tocar, porque es como cuando un vampiro bebe sangre nueva (risas).Es fantàstico.

JP: Tambièn quisiera preguntarles ¿còmo es trabajar con Paul?

RT: Paul Rodgers realmente fue uno de nuestros, digamos, modelos cuando formamos el grupo , y de hecho el era el cantante favorito de Freddie, en serio…

JP: Es cierto..

RT: … Ha pasado tanto tiempo .Si.

PAUL RODGERS: Es increible trabajar con Brian y Roger, tù sabes, con los cuates, porque son un grupo tan maravilloso y esto me motiva mucho, tù sabes, la motivación es mutua, nos la transmitimos el uno al otro, y eso es lo que verdaderamente busco.

PARTE 1:

CYNTHIA FOX: Este es 95.5KLOS en Los Angeles. Bienvenidos a In Tune at Noon. Soy Cynthia Fox y me encuentro sentada junto a uno de mis personajes favoritos en el planeta , que es , por supuesto , Brian May de Queen, y a nombre de todos los fans de Queen que son demasiado tìmidos como para acercarse a ti , te doy la bienvenida Brian, (risas).

Ah, es grandioso. Es una suerte inesperada en mi vida , tù sabes. Realmente pensaba que ese habìa sido mi papel durante mucho tiempo , me veìa a mi mismo como una ex estrella del rock , si es que alguna vez lo fui.Tù sabes, yo era una persona normal con una familia, y ese tipo de cosas, y entonces viene Paul Rodgers, sin buscarlo de hecho,
y de repente veao a este tipo y pienso “ Sì, relamente podrìa interactuar con èl”. Y fuè la misma sensaciòn de los viejos dìas. Tù sabes , eres un muchacho y te reùnes con alguien y te das cuenta que tienen algo en comùn y piensas “Oigan.Formemos un grupo” , algo parecido, y fuè asì de simple.

Asì que el hecho de que estè de gira, en lugar de en casa con mi familia y mi – todo aquello que consideraba esenciales en mi vida, es verdaderamente extraordinario y es muy impresionante descubrir que aùn lo disfruto.De hecho quizàs màs que nunca. Esta gira ha sido maravillosa, sorprendente, y aùn màs el estar allì y recibir esa reacción e interaccion.

PARTE 2

CYNTHIA FOX: Tu trabajo con Paul Rodgers parece hacer aflorar de todos. Es decir, parece que èl se està creciendo ante la situaciòn.Es un evento que representa un reto.. Lo que noto en Paul es que ahora su voz adquiriò mas tonalidades fabulosas que no habìa escuchado antes. Le està dando un cierto- casi parece un toque de medio oriente a lo que hace con “Fell Like Makin’ Love” (“Tengo ganas de harte el amor”) . Ahora, ¿esto tiene algo que ver con ese programa auditivo intensivo que le impusiste, en el que debe escuchar “Kashmir” 50 veces al dìa?

BM: (risas) Bueno, realmente se ha puesto a trabajar. Es sorprendente. Es interesante la observación que haces sobre Paul .Si, ha cambiado. Se ha superado a si mismo. Y nosotros tambièn hemos cambiado. Existe una interacción excelente. Hemos descubierto cosas en ambas partes , y si, lo notè en Paul. Corre una mentira allà afuera. Algunas de las reseñas, de hecho la mayorìa de ellas han sido muy buenas, pero algunas de ellas dicen:”Oh, bueno, por supuesto Paul tiene una voz màs grave que Freddie”.Bueno, de hecho no es cierto. El està alcanzando tonos màs altos que los que Freddie alguna vez cantò en algunos de los temas que interpretamos, y èl solo elige momentos distintos, pero, hombre, tiene una voz asombrosa. Es increíble, tù sabes. Y Freddie lo amaba. No hay duda de ello. Freddie verdaderamente lo consideraba un hèroe y una gran influencia.

PARTE 3

CYNTHIA FOX: Se han incorporado fragmentos de videos clàsicos de Freddie en el concierto, y aquellos ajenos al grupo estaban bastante familiarizados a los relatos de su grandiosidad , pero tù lo conocìas, obviamente por el trato cotidiano.Si por ejemplo, tomamos un fragmento del video en concierto que vimos en primera fila hace algunas semanas, uno podìa escuchar cuàn orgulloso estaba de ti y de tu destreza musical , la forma en que te presentaba , la manera en que se referìa a ti . Asì que pensè, què dinàmica tan interesante existìa entre ustedes dos; èl de cierta forma exagerado, impulsivo, y tù pareces màs reflexivo, meditabundo, cuidadoso, te tomas tu tiempo, ¿què es lo que…? ¿Còmo funcionaba esta dinàmica, para empezar? (risas) Y por otro lado, ¿Què hizo aflorar en ti? , ¿Què hizo èl que tù aportaras?

BM: Es una pregunta muy interesante y frecuentemente pienso, tù sabes, si no hubiese sido por Freddie, ¿dònde estarìamos? Probablemente en algún lugar muy diferente .Tal vez serìa un astrònomo o algo por el estilo. Freddie tenìa esa cualidad de contagiarte su entusiasmo. Y de hecho, cuando inicialmente formamos el grupo, Roger y yo estàbamos
sumamente desilusionados del mundo del rock, tù sabes. Ya habìamos formado un grupo llamado “Smile” , tuvimos malas experiencias y no estabamos seguros si alguna vez funcionarìa, tù sabes; y llega Freddie tan confiado, y , tù sabes, algo asì como : “Si me aceptan como cantante serà diferente, ustedes saben. Tù ppodrìas hacer esto, y tù esto otro; tu sabes, y yo aquello. Y ustedes saben, vamos a hacerlo”. E incluso de hecho ignoràbamos si efectivamente Freddie podìa cantar cuando llegò, tù sabes. Si , no tengo idea si algunas de esas cintas circulen por allì. Èl solìa correr por todos lados gritando en voz en cuello , dando alaridos, y era exagerado, estaba absolutamente fuera de control. Èl solo aprendiò ese control conforme adquiriò su propio estilo, con el paso del tiempo, tanto en escena como el estudio. Asì que èl era un tipo EXALTADO, la clase de personaje extremadamente colorido y exagerado, con un entusiasmo exacerbado, y solo pensàbamos: “Bueno, tù sabes, aùn cuando no sepa cantar (risas), tiene un ingrediente fantàstico” ( Cynthia rìe) , tù sabes.

PARTE 4

CYNTHIA FOX: Algo màs que me inquieta sobremanera, es còmo conociste a otro líder mundial, Nelson Mandela. Ambos estuvieron en los conciertos 46664 en pro de concientizaciòn sobre la lucha contra el SIDA, junto con Bono y Bob Geldof. Cuando conoces a alguien como Nelson Mandela , quien ha pasado por tantas cosas,¡oh¡, solo cuèntanos còmo es eso.¿Sientes una vibra especial, un magnetismo especial que no percibes en otras personas, dados los increíbles y extremadamente difíciles retos que no solo tuvo que pasar , sino que incluso superò exitosamente?

BM: Es justamente lo mas emocionante del mundo. Èl, como señalas… ves por todo lo que el hombre ha tenido que pasar, su fè, su valor,y esa cualidad de misericordia en èl, es algo que todo lider del mundo deberìa tener. Ves su trayectoria, tù sabes, uno piensa si uno fuera a prisiòn… Si uno fuera puesto tras las rejas, en condiciones sumamente austeras… Y èl durmió en una celda de 6 pies, seis años de su vida, y no era lo suficientemente grande para que se recostara completamente estirado, sin una cobija. Tù sabes, uno podrìa pensar que uno se enojarìa tanto que desearìa vengarse , y que uno saldrìa y querrìa destrozarlo todo; y este hombre hizo exactamente lo opuesto. Èl saliò y perdonò a todo aquel que lo habìa dañado, y construyò una Sudáfrica basada en la uniòn de ambas naciones, la negra y la blanca.

PARTE 5

CYNTHIA FOX: Permìteme hacer un comentario sobre la enorme labor que tambièn has llevado a cabo con tu organización benèfica a travès de los años. Definitivamente tu fundaciòn a aligerado la carga de tantas vìctimas del SIDA mediante donaciones, y como de todos es sabido, cualquier persona que visite tu sitio brianmay.com, y entre a la secciòn Soapbox , constatarà que existe un genuino interès y atenciòn de tu parte hacia la crisis que viven tanto el planeta como los animales. ¿Hay algo màs en este momento que desees agregar? , por ejemplo, mencionamos al aire la caza de focas que se lleva a cabo actualmente, ¿hay algo sobre lo que quieras hablar?, ¿algo que quieras decir ahora?

BM: Podrìa decirlo en mi Soapbox, ¿no? Efectivamente, hay algo que me gustarìa ayudar a cambiar antes de morir. Si, creo que hemos adoptado una actitud errònea ante los animales, punto. Me gustarìa ver que se firmara un acuerdo al respecto. Sabes que antes se consideraba correcto el que la gente tuviera esclavos en nuestros paises, y tambièn se aceptaba el que las mujeres fuesen tratadas como seres humanos de segunda y no se les permitiera votar, tù sabes. Esas cosas han cambiado. Y pienso que la situación con los animales tiene que cambiar. Los animales, desde mi punto de vista, tienen tanto derecho a habitar este planeta como nosotros, y no temos derecho para humillarlos, torturarlos y causarles dolor, y eso es todo.Tù sabes, me gustarìa un cambio. Me gustarìa ver el fin de todo este abuso, la experimentación en animales, y el estùpido asunto de la caza que AÙN continùa en Inglaterra, tù sabes, el torturar a los animales solo por el placer de hacerlo me horroriza. Debe cambiar. Tenemos que darnos cuenta qiue no somos necesariamente la especie màs importante de este planeta. Creemos que lo somos, y quizà no sea asì. ¿Por què deberìamos pensar que lo somos, sòlo porque podemos hablar y cubrir el planeta de concreto? Eso no significa que estemos destinados a sobrevivir y que los demàs estèn destinados a ser subyugados.

Brian's interview with Cynthia Fox prior to the Arrowhead Pond show in Anaheim.

PART 1:

CYNTHIA FOX: it is 95.5KLOS Los Angeles. Welcome to In Tune at Noon. I'm Cynthia Fox sitting with one of my favourite people on the planet, that of course, Brian May of Queen, and on behalf of all the Queen fans who are much too shy to approach you, Brian, (laughs) welcome back.

We're very excited about the show that's happening tonight at The Pond and everyone is so very thrilled for you. There is so many of your peers have said, your're a musician and you need to be out there playing music and now you are, and how does that feel? (chuckles)

BRIAN MAY: Thanks for the welcome.

Ah - it does feel great. It feels like a huge bonus in my life, you know. I actually did think that that was what I used to do for a long time I thought of myself as an ex rock star, if ever I was a rock star. You know, a sort of nomal person with a family life and stuff, and then along comes Paul Rodgers, unlooked for really, and suddenly I look at this guy and I think "Yes, I really could interact with this guy." And it was the same feeling as in the old days. You know, you're a kid and you get together with someone and you realise you relate and you think "Hey. Let's make a band," kind of thing, and it was that simple.

So the fact that I'm out here instead of back home with my family and my - all the things that I thought were essential to my life it's quite stunning to me and its pretty stunning to discover that I still enjoy. In fact I maybe enjoy it more than ever. It's been great this leg, amazing, amazing just to be out there and getting that reaction and interaction.

PART 2

CYNTHIA FOX: Your combination also with Paul Rodgers seems to be bringing out the best in everybody. I mean, he seems to be rising to the occasion. It's a challenging situation to be in. But what I'm noticing with Paul is that there's so many great colours now in his voice that I didn't hear before. He's almost bringing kind of - it's almost like a middle-eastern flavour to some of the stuff that he's doing with "Feel Like Makin' Love". Now, is that anything to do with that enforced listening programme that you've put him on, where he has to listen to "Kashmir" fifty times a day?

BM: (laughs) Well, he's sort of put himself on it really. It is amazing. It's interesting that you have observed that in Paul. Yes, he has changed. He's really come out of himself. And we've changed too. It's a very good kind of interaction. We've discovered things in each other, and yeah, I notice it in Paul. There's this kind of fallacy out there. Some of the reviews - actually most of the reviews have been very good, but some of them say "Oh well of course Paul has a lower voice than Freddie." Well it's actually not true. He's singing some higher lines than Freddie ever sang, in some of the songs we do and he just chooses different moments, but boy, he's got an amazing voice. Incredible, you know. And Freddie loved him. I've no doubts about that. Freddie really regarded him as a great hero and a great influence.

PART 3

CYNTHIA FOX: You've incorporated vintage footage of Freddie in the concert and everybody outside the band are fairly well acquainted with the tales of flamboyance but you knew him, obviously, on a day-to-day basis. From the concert footage, for instance we featured some concert footage on the Front Row a few weeks back, you could really hear how proud he was of you and your musicianship, the way he introduced you, the way he talked about you. So I thought, what an interesting dynamic between the two of you - him kind of over the top, impulsive, and you seems to be more thoughtful, reflective, careful, taking your time, what is it that - how did this dynamic actually even work to begin with (laughs) and then what did he bring out of you? What was he able to draw from you?

BM: It's a very interesting question and I often think, you know, if it hadn't been for Freddie, where would I be? In probably a very different place. I would probably be an astronomer or something. Freddie did have this way of kind of catching you up in his enthusiasm. And actually when we first formed the band, me and Roger were pretty disillusioned about the Rock Business, you know. We'd done this thing called "Smile" and had bad experiences and we weren't sure if it was ever going to work, you know, and Freddie so full of confidence, and you know like "If you have me singing, it's gonna be different, you know. You can do this and you can do this you know, and I'll do that and, you know, let's do it." And we didn't even know if he could sing really when Freddie first came along, in fact, you know if, I don't know if any of those tapes are still around, he used to kind of run around and sort of yell and scream and be very over the top and very out of control. He only learned that control as he fashioned himself later on, on the stage and in the studio. So he was this EBULLIENT guy, this very colourful, over the top character full of enthusiasm and we just thought "Well, you know, even if he can't sing (laughs) he's got some fantastic (Cynthia laughing) ingredient, you know.

PART 4

CYNTHIA FOX: Another, a thing I'm very curious about is how you met another world leader, Nelson Mandela. You were down there with the 46664 AIDS awareness concerts, there with Bono, Bob Geldof, when you meet someone like a Nelson Mandela who's been through so much, oh just tell us what that's like. Is there a special vibe, a special presence you just don't get from other people, given all the insurmountable challenges that he not only went through, but also conquered.

BM: It's just the most thrilling thing in the world. He, like you say, you look at what the man has been through and his faith and his courage and his quality of mercy is something which every world leader should have. You look at the way, you know, you would think if you were in jail. If you were put behind bars in very austere conditions, and he slept in a 6ft cell for years of your life, not even long enough for him to lay down straight, without a blanket, you know, you would think that you would get so angry and want revenge and you would come out there and you would wanna tear the place apart, and this man did the exact opposite. He came out and forgave everybody that had wronged him, and built a South Africa based on bringing the two nations together, the black and the white.

PART 5

CYNTHIA FOX: Let me talk a little bit about the tremendous amount of charity work too you've done over the years. You have definitely, your funding has eased the burdens of so many AIDS victims through all the donations and as anyone knows who goes and visits brianmay.com and sees your Soapbox, there's a genuine amount of care and concern for the plight of the planet, the plight of animals. Is there anything presently you wanted to say now, for instance we mentioned on the air the harp seal hunt that's going on now and again, and is there anything that you wanted to address now or say?

BM: I could get on my Soapbox, couldn't I? Yeah, that's something that I would like to contribute a change in before I die. Yeah, I think we have the wrong attitude to animals, full stop. I'd like to see a new contract negotiated. You know it used to be okay for people to have slaves in our countries and it used to be okay for women to be secondary human beings and not be allowed to vote, you know. Those things changed and I think the situation with animals has to change. Animals, in my opinion, have as much right to be on this planet as we do and we have no right to subject them to indignities, pain and torture, and that's it. You know I would like to see a change. I would like to see an end to all this abuse, experimentation on animals and stupid hunting stuff which still goes on in England, you know, torturing animals for pleasure just appalls me. It has to change. We have to realise that we are not necessarily the most important species on this planet. We think we are, but maybe we aren't. Why would we think we are just 'cose we can talk and cover the planet with concrete? It does not mean that we are meant to survive and all the rest are meant to be subjugated.
